The Scrap Exchange

From April through mid-August 2026, I was the Artist-in-Residence at the Scrap Exchange, a nationally recognized creative reuse center in my home city of Durham and one of the most important institutions in my life as a decades-long artist-educator. They hadn’t really had any program like this in many years, but they agreed to my proposal, and the Ministry of Cardboard was born! Through this project, funded by a Snapdragon Grant (a pot of Andy Warhol Foundation money disbursed through VAE Raleigh), I was bale to b uild an immersive environment out of 95% percent post-consumer cardboard while inviting in contributing artists through an open call, collaborating with volunteer caretakers of the space, and paying local artists a living wage to work, imagine, and create in the space. A magical experience, truly.
