Ghost Choir

Ghost Choir is a four-room installation structured around a single event: a sound that erupted from my body in the winter of 1996. For years, I have returned to this memory through a recurring image in my drawings and prints of a figure bellowing a solid cone of sound. This exhibition uses the railroad-style sequence of rooms at Greensboro Project Space to fragment that singular sound and distribute it across a series of four distinct environments.

The work is performed by four of my studio personae: Otto, Santiago, Tammy, and Njezan. Each persona operates under a specific set of rules and material constraints, acting as a lens through which the sound is translated. By assigning each one a portion of the wave, the installation tracks the sound as it moves from the body into progressively less coherent states.

Across the four rooms, the sound shifts in character, beginning as something dense and embodied before moving through urgent gestures and systematic ordering. It finally reaches a state of dissipation, where the sound is reduced to particles and residual traces. Ghost Choir is an experiment in how a unified moment can be broken apart, reorganized, and understood through the interaction of separate systems.
